Thomas Vargas joins Political Science as a Postdoctoral Fellow

Thomas joins the Department June 1 to work with Dr. Michelle Dion

Jun 02, 2020

Thomas Vargas’s research addresses the barriers to quality public education provision across Latin America. His work emphasizes both domestic and international dimensions of policy reform, emphasizing both the importance of international policy learning and domestic political alliances.

His insights are based on interviews and archival evidence collected during his field work in Colombia, Costa Rica, and El Salvador, an experiment with education bureaucrats, and cross-national statistical analysis of trends in education across Latin America in the last two decades.

While at McMaster, Thomas will be working on turning his dissertation into a book and researching how citizen perceptions of government limit the government’s ability to improve public services.

In addition, he will work as an Editorial Assistant for Dr. Dion in her capacity as an Editor of the American Political Science Review and collaborate with her on various research projects.

Thomas will earn his PhD from the Department of Political Science at the University of Minnesota later this summer.
