Research in Progress Seminar (RIPS) - March 18, 2022

Panel on Decolonizing the Syllabus / Decolonizing the Classroom

Mar 02, 2022

This panel discussion reflects on the opportunities but also the traps attending meaningful attempts to rethink what we teach, whose voices and perspectives are privileged, how we teach, but also the structures that condition and constrain such attempts. Is it possible, in light of the structuring power of the colonial library of knowledge, to decolonise pedagogy? What is it that needs interrupting if we are serious about decolonizing the classroom? What are the possibilities and contradictions of politically meaningful scholarship across North/South, but also across academia, community-based engagements, and activist networks? One of the most serious challenges that the decolonization agenda currently faces in academia is co-optation, both by neoliberal trends with the academy and by fascist tendencies within the state.

This panel will bring together the following scholars:

Dr. Shiera S. Malik, Associate Professor, International Studies, DePaul University

Dr. Desirée Poets, Assistant Professor, Political Science, Virginia Tech

Dr. Rahul Rao, Lecturer, International Relations, University of St. Andrews

Dr. Zubairu Wai, Associate Professor, Global Development Studies, University of Toronto
