Students in Political Science 4D06 engaged in a mock National Security Council (NSC) meeting on April 4th. They debated American policy toward a hypothetical Russian incursion into Latvia. In this simulation the students considered the implications of a Russian threat against a NATO member, the trade-offs involved with potential diplomatic and military action, the financial and human costs of all the options, the role of propaganda, the geopolitical history of the Baltic region, and the domestic implications of potential options, among others. They deliberated how to deter Russia without escalating the conflict. All the students engaged in a convincing role play and came away from this exercise with a better understanding of the issues, policymakers, and challenges involved in the creation and implementation of American foreign policy. Congratulations to all the participants!
