Incoming PhD Candidate Cassandra Preece Selected as One of the Taiwan MOFA’s Canadian Young Leaders to Visit Taiwan!

Incoming Political Science doctoral candidate Cassandra Preece selected by Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) as part of the Canadian Young Leaders’ Delegation Trip to visit Taiwan from 26 May- 1 Jun 2019!

Jun 25, 2019

Cassandra Preece was one of eleven delegates selected from across Canada to visit Taiwan for seven-days in May 2019 as part of the Canadian Young Leaders’ Delegation Trip! Sponsored and organized by the Taiwanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 12 young professionals met with government officials, including those from the Ministry of Mainland Affairs, the National Development Council and the Bureau of Foreign Trade, to exchange ideas and strengthen relations between Canada and Taiwan. Aside from official ministerial visits, the Canadian delegation also visited historical sites and research institutions such as the Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy and the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy. Taiwan is one of the most open and progressive democracies in Asia and is of particular interest to Cassandra Preece as she begins her doctoral studies with support from the Ethnic Quota Global Study Doctoral Fellowship in Sep 2019.

Cassandra found the trip very well-organized and fruitful and would encourage all young Canadians to seek out opportunities through the Taiwan Economic and Cultural Offices in Canada. As she says: “The Taiwan delegation trip was an extremely beneficial learning and networking experience. With my interest and work on McMaster’s Ethnic Quota project, a meeting with the Council of Indigenous Peoples was especially noteworthy for me- highlighting the challenges of indigenous communities in Taiwan and the current electoral framework for strengthening minority representation in the country. I am very grateful to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Taiwan Economic and Cultural Office in Toronto for the opportunity!”
