How does new media spread support for LGBT+ rights?

How does new media spread support for LGBT+ rights?

Political Scientist, Dr. Michelle Dion examines the role of internet access and support for same-sex marriage.

Oct 29, 2018

Dr. Michelle Dion and Dr. Jordi Díez (University of Guelph) have published new research in Latin American Research Review that examines the relationship between internet use, news consumption, and support for same-sex marriage rights throughout Latin America.

Drs. Dion and Díez explain that internet access provides opportunities for Latin Americans, particularly those who are most interested in keeping up with the news, to learn about regional and international trends that are expanding the rights of same-sex couples. This, in turn, is then associated with more support for those rights at home.

Dr. Dion was also interviewed about this research on the podcast Understanding Latin American Politics, which can be found on iTunes and Spotify.

In addition, Drs. Dion and Diez summarize the main findings of their article in a blog post on Panoramas, an academic blog focused on issues in Latin America and the Caribbean.
