27th Annual Critical Theory Roundtable

The two-day international workshop featured a public lecture by political theorist Andreas Kalyvas on 'Democracy and the Poor'

Oct 15, 2019

On October 4-5 the department hosted the 27th Annual Critical Theory Roundtable, an international gathering of scholars working in the tradition of Frankfurt School Critical Theory. More than two dozen faculty and students from Canada, the US, Latin America, and Europe met at McMaster's downtown Centre for Continuing Education and the Hamilton Public Library for two days of papers on diverse themes in critical social and political theory. The Roundtable featured a lecture on Friday evening by political theorist Andreas Kalyvas of the New School for Social Research on "Democracy and the Poor." Sponsored by the Socrates Project, it attracted a large audience of students and community members and generated a lively debate. Event coordinator James Ingram wishes to thank PhD student Riva Gewarges, MA student Dina Hansen, third-year student Aly Tkachenko, and MA student Erin Chewter, visiting the department from the University of Victoria, for all their hard work and enthusiasm.
