Analysis: Program at Hamilton Public Library shows how libraries can expand the social services they provide

Public libraries are becoming crucial community hubs, offering more than just books. They provide vital support and resources, especially for people facing complex health and social challenges. The Hamilton Public Library (HPL) has taken a significant step by integrating social workers into its services. In partnership with Hamilton Public Health Services, HPL launched a program in November 2022 that places part-time social workers in its central library to assist with issues like housing insecurity, mental health, and substance use.
This initiative aims to address the growing needs of library visitors and enhance the library’s role in community support. Social workers help connect individuals to resources, provide crisis intervention, and train library staff to handle emergencies. This evolving model signifies a broader shift in the function of public libraries, transforming them into key social infrastructures. The success of HPL’s program will be studied to guide future implementations and improve service delivery, reflecting a new era of public libraries as essential community anchors.
